A nunatak is the summit or ridge of a mountain that pokes above an ice field or glacier that otherwise buries the rest of the mountain or ridge beneath it, often forming a distinctive pyramidal peak. A nunatak that stands entirely alone is sometimes called a glacial island, while a smaller nunatak that has been rounded by the grinding action of the surrounding ice is instead called a rognon.
