Mount Rinjani is an active stratovolcano in North Lombok, in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province, rising to 3,726 meters, the second highest volcano in Indonesia. Beside its summit lies a caldera holding Segara Anak, a crater lake at about 2,000 meters elevation with a striking blue color and an estimated depth of 200 meters. Rinjani's eruption in 1257 is considered one of the most powerful volcanic events of the last two thousand years, possibly triggering global cooling and crop failures far from Indonesia. The volcano last erupted significantly in 2015 and remains active and monitored, and it holds deep spiritual importance for the indigenous Sasak people; its caldera was designated part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2018.
