Mount Mihara is a stratovolcano with a summit caldera on Izu Oshima, a Japanese island south of Tokyo, reaching an elevation of 764 meters. The volcano is predominantly basaltic and has a history of major eruptions roughly every 100 to 150 years. Its most significant recent eruption, in 1986, produced lava fountains reaching 1.6 kilometers high and a 16-kilometer-high subplinian ash plume rated 3 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, combining a central vent eruption, a radial fissure eruption, explosive activity, lava flows and a lava lake, and forced the evacuation of all 12,000 residents of the island. A further eruption followed in October 1990. Mount Mihara remains an active volcano and continues to be monitored as a hazard to the island's population.
