Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi is an active stratovolcano on the border between Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, standing 2,968 meters high after losing 38 meters of elevation in its 2010 eruption. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia, erupting regularly since at least 1548, and sits about 28 kilometers north of the city of Yogyakarta, home to 2.4 million people, with villages inhabiting its slopes up to 1,700 meters in elevation. Smoke frequently rises visibly from its summit, and its 2010 eruption killed 353 people, with further eruptions in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Because of its destructive potential and the dense population living close to it, Merapi is designated one of the world's Decade Volcanoes.
