Mount Mabu is a mountain in northern Mozambique, rising to approximately 1,700 meters and known chiefly for the old-growth rain forest that covers about 7,000 hectares of its slopes. Though well known locally, the forest and its unusually diverse plant and animal life remained essentially unknown to science until a team from the Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust visited in 2005, followed by botanists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2008, expeditions made possible after researchers spotted the mountain's forest on satellite imagery while searching for undiscovered wildlife habitat in Africa. That origin has earned Mount Mabu the nickname the Google Forest, and the mountain now forms part of a proposed ecoregion called the Southeast Africa Montane Archipelago.
