Mount Hombori, also called Hombori Tondo, is an inselberg in Mali's Mopti Region near the town of Hombori, and at 1,155 meters above sea level it is the highest point in the country. Its summit holds a plateau of about two square kilometers, ringed by sheer cliffs on all sides that have kept cattle from grazing there and allowed a distinctive range of plant and animal life to flourish as an exceptional biodiversity hotspot within the Sahel. Caves within the mountain show evidence of human habitation reaching back more than 2,000 years, and the site holds a sacred place within Dogon religious tradition.
