Mount Cameroon

Mount Cameroon is an active stratovolcano in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, next to the city of Buea near the Gulf of Guinea, and at 4,040 meters it is the highest point in western and central sub-Saharan Africa. Also known as Cameroon Mountain, Fako, or by the indigenous name Mongo ma Ndemi, meaning Mountain of Greatness, it is the fourth most prominent peak in Africa and the 31st most prominent in the world, and forms part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, the volcanic zone that also includes Lake Nyos. The volcano erupted eight times during the twentieth century, in 1909, 1922, 1925, 1954, 1959, 1982, 1999 and 2000, and most recently in February 2012, when a brief eruption caused minor injuries among the guides and porters on the mountain.
