Mount Berlin stands in the Flood Range of Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica, about 100 kilometers inland from the Hobbs Coast, and at 3,478 meters is the highest volcano in that range. It is a composite structure of two coalesced volcanic centers, Berlin proper with a 2-kilometer-wide summit crater and, 3.5 kilometers away, Merrem Peak with a smaller 2.5-by-1-kilometer crater, together spanning about 20 kilometers and holding a combined volume of roughly 200 cubic kilometers. The volcano is built mainly of trachyte lava flows and pyroclastic rock, with lesser amounts of comendite, pantellerite and phonolite. It began erupting during the Pliocene and remained active through the late Pleistocene and into the Holocene, with its most recent eruption dated to roughly 10,300 years ago; fumarolic ice towers on its surface show it remains geothermally active today. This entity documents Mount Berlin specifically as a geological formation, a composite Antarctic volcano of coalesced trachyte cones still fumarolically active.
