Mount Asama

Mount Asama is an active stratovolcano straddling the border of Gunma and Nagano prefectures in central Honshu, Japan, rising to 2,568 meters and ranked the most active volcano on Honshu. Japan's Meteorological Agency classifies it as rank A, its highest activity category, and its most recent eruption occurred on August 7, 2019. The volcano sits where the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc meets the Northeastern Japan Arc, and its andesite and dacite rock records eruptive activity from the Late Pleistocene through the Holocene, with documented eruptions dating back to at least 685 CE. It is included among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
