The Morteratsch Glacier, known in Romansh as Vadret da Morteratsch, is the largest glacier by area in the Bernina Range of the Bundner Alps in Switzerland, and the third largest in the Eastern Alps by area and volume after the Pasterze Glacier and the Gepatschferner. It is a valley glacier with a pronounced ice front, fed by an accumulation zone lying among peaks including Piz Morteratsch, Piz Bernina and Bellavista. As of 2008 it covered about 15.3 square kilometers including the neighboring Pers Glacier, but it has been retreating quickly, shrinking from 7 kilometers long in 1973 to 5.85 kilometers in 2016; the glacier has pulled back more than 2,800 meters since a railway station was built at its former ice front, with retreat accelerating to about 30 meters a year between 1999 and 2005.
