Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain massif in Catalonia, Spain, roughly forty kilometers northwest of Barcelona, rising to about 1,236 meters at its highest point, Sant Jeroni. The mountain is built from a thick layer of sedimentary conglomerate rock, pebbles and boulders cemented together, deposited millions of years ago and later uplifted and eroded into the massif's distinctive rounded towers and vertical fluted pinnacles. The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat sits partway up the mountain and has made it one of Catalonia's most visited sites.
