Monte Pissis

Monte Pissis stands on the border of the La Rioja and Catamarca provinces in Argentina, about 25 kilometers east of the Chilean border and roughly 550 kilometers north of Aconcagua, named for the French geologist Pedro Jose Amadeo Pissis, who worked for the Chilean government. It is an extinct volcano, the second-tallest volcano in the world and the third-highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. Despite the dry conditions of the surrounding Atacama Desert, the mountain carries an extensive glacier with crevasses that is unique for the region, and sources describe its bare summit as the highest point on Earth without permanent glaciation.
