Mons Klint is a chalk cliff on the island of Mon in southeastern Denmark, rising to around 128 meters above the Baltic Sea. It is formed from a thick deposit of white Maastrichtian-age chalk, laid down roughly 70 million years ago from the compressed calcareous remains of marine coccolithophores and other microorganisms accumulating on the floor of a warm, shallow late Cretaceous sea. Unlike the more evenly bedded chalk of the White Cliffs of Dover, the chalk at Mons Klint was later folded and thrust into steep, irregular blocks by the pressure of advancing glacial ice sheets during the Pleistocene, giving the cliff its distinctive jagged, faulted profile rather than a simple flat bedding plane.
