Momotombo

Momotombo stands on the shore of Lake Managua in Leon Department, Nicaragua, near the city of Leon, reaching an elevation of about 1,297 meters. It is a stratovolcano within the Central America Volcanic Arc, prized for its near-perfect symmetrical cone, which has made it a recurring symbol of Nicaragua on everything from murals to matchboxes. A major eruption in 1610 forced the residents of the original city of Leon to relocate about 48 kilometers to the west, and further eruptions followed in 1886, 1905, and most recently in November 2015 and February 2016. A younger satellite cone, Momotombito, rises as an island within Lake Managua, and a geothermal field operating on the volcano's southern flank supplies part of Nicaragua's electricity. This entity documents Momotombo specifically as a geological formation, a symmetrical Nicaraguan stratovolcano whose 1610 eruption forced the relocation of the city of Leon.
