The Moenkopi Formation is a geological formation spread across New Mexico, northern Arizona, Nevada, southeastern California, eastern Utah and western Colorado. A distinctive red sandstone deposit with shale, it formed during the Early Triassic and possibly into the Middle Triassic, roughly 240 million years ago, in fluvial to marine environments across what are now the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Its thickness varies greatly, from a feather edge near the Uncompahgre highlands to more than 600 meters in southwestern Utah and over 400 meters in synclines of the Paradox Basin.
