Mission Valley is a wide river valley trending east-west through San Diego, California, carrying the San Diego River toward the Pacific Ocean. The city divides it into two planning neighborhoods, Mission Valley East and Mission Valley West, split by State Route 163, and the valley runs from Interstate 5 in the west to Interstate 15 in the east. It was the site of California's first Spanish settlement, established in 1769, and today functions as an important shopping and entertainment center for San Diego, mixing commercial development with condominiums and apartments.
