Mischief Reef is a low tide elevation reef and atoll enclosing a large lagoon in the southeastern Dangerous Ground area of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, about 239 kilometers west of Palawan Island in the Philippines. Its rocks are exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide. China has held de facto control of the reef since 1995 and built a substantial artificial island atop it between 2013 and 2016, including a 2,700 meter runway and military facilities, despite a 2016 arbitration ruling that the feature cannot generate territorial claims because of its low tide elevation status.
