Millstone Grit is a series of coarse-grained sandstones of Carboniferous age found across the British Isles, named for its historic use in cutting the grinding stones of watermills. It is exposed widely through the Pennines of northern England, especially the Peak District, as well as parts of Wales and Ireland. Beyond its old use for millstones and building material, it now also serves as a major source of water supply and one of Britain's premier rock-climbing grounds.
