The Middle Rhine is the stretch of the Rhine between Bingen and Bonn in Germany, flowing through the Rhine Gorge, a formation cut by erosion at roughly the same pace as regional uplift, leaving the river near its original level while the surrounding land rose around it. The gorge runs about 130 metres deep from the clifftops to the average waterline, and its upper half between Bingen and Koblenz is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape lined with castles and terraced vineyards.
