A mid-ocean ridge is an underwater mountain system formed by plate tectonics, typically lying about 2,600 meters deep while still rising roughly 2,000 meters above the surrounding ocean floor. It marks a divergent plate boundary where seafloor spreading takes place, and the rate at which the seafloor spreads apart determines both the shape of the ridge's crest and how wide the ridge system is within its ocean basin.
