Matanuska Glacier

Matanuska Glacier is a valley glacier in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough of Alaska, about 100 miles northeast of Anchorage near the Glenn Highway in an area known as Glacier View. It measures about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, making it the largest glacier in the United States that is accessible by car, and its terminus feeds the Matanuska River. The glacier advances at roughly one foot per day and its status is listed as retreating, though as of 2007 its terminus position had stayed relatively stable over the previous three decades despite thinning of the lower glacier. It sits within Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site, an Alaska state park, though the only bridge giving access from Alaska Route 1 is privately controlled and tolled.
