Margerie Glacier

Margerie Glacier is a tidewater glacier about 21 miles long in Glacier Bay, Alaska, in the United States, within Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. It originates on the southern slopes of Mount Root, at an elevation of 12,860 feet on the Alaska-Canada border, and flows southeast before turning northeast to reach its terminus at sea level in Tarr Inlet. About a mile wide with a 350-foot total height at its terminus, including 100 feet underwater, it is one of the park's most active and most visited glaciers and has remained stable in recent decades while most of the park's other tidewater glaciers have been receding. The glacier is named for the French geologist Emmanuel de Margerie, who visited the area in 1913.
