Mar Menor, meaning smaller sea, is a coastal saltwater lagoon on the Iberian Peninsula in the Region of Murcia, Spain, near Cartagena, bordered by the municipalities of Cartagena, Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar. It is the largest lagoon in Spain, covering 135 square kilometers with about 70 kilometers of coastline, and is separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, a sandbar 22 kilometers long and 100 to 1,200 meters wide. The lagoon is roughly triangular, with Cape Palos forming its southeastern point, reaches a maximum depth of 7 meters, and holds relatively high salinity that aids flotation. Five islets, Perdiguera, Mayor, also called El Barón, Ciervo, Redonda and del Sujeto, lie within it.
