A machair is a fertile, low lying grassy plain found along parts of the northwestern coasts of Ireland and Scotland, most notably the Outer Hebrides, with the best examples on North and South Uist, Harris, and Lewis. In Ireland, machair is listed as a priority habitat and given the highest level of protection under the European Union Habitats Directive.
