Longyear Valley

Longyear Valley is a valley and ravine on Spitsbergen in Svalbard, winding about 40 kilometers west northwest to end at Adventfjorden, the broadest inlet on the islands west side. It has a few wind gaps to the south and northeast over small glaciers that feed streams into the valley, and it lies between the mountains Platabergat and Gruvefjellet. The town of Longyearbyen, named for the American industrialist John Munro Longyear, sits at its foot, and the Longyear River that runs through it, like the other rivers on the island, carries silt from the surrounding glaciers.
