A lithalsa is a frost-induced raised landform that develops in permafrost areas with mineral-rich soils, formed when a perennial lens of ice grows within the soil and pushes the ground surface upward. The term is sometimes used broadly enough to also cover related ice-cored mounds such as palsas and pingos, though a lithalsa is distinguished by its mineral, rather than peat-dominated, soil.
