Line Islands

The Line Islands are a chain of eleven atolls and coral islands in the central Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii, stretching about 2,350 kilometers from northwest to southeast, one of the longest island chains on Earth. All of the islands originated from volcanic activity, and most enclose partial or full lagoons except Vostok and Jarvis. Eight of the atolls belong to Kiribati and three, Jarvis Island, Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll, are administered by the United States as part of the United States Minor Outlying Islands. Only Kiritimati, Tabuaeran and Teraina are permanently inhabited, with a combined population of roughly 8,813.
