Liberty Cap is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County, California, at the northwestern edge of Little Yosemite Valley immediately north of Nevada Fall along the John Muir Trail, with the formation Mount Broderick standing adjacent to it. It reaches an elevation of 7,080 feet (2,160 meters), rising about 1,700 feet from the base of Nevada Fall with a topographic prominence of 956 feet, and is built of Cretaceous-age granite typical of the Sierra Nevada, with Half Dome as its designated parent peak. The dome takes its name from an 1865 visit by California Governor Leland Stanford, who reportedly saw a resemblance between the formation and the cap of liberty depicted on a half-dollar coin shown to him by his companion James Hutchings.
