The Lias Group is a sequence of marine sedimentary rocks, chiefly limestones, shales, marls and clays, spread across a large part of western Europe and spanning roughly 20 million years from the Rhaetian stage of the Late Triassic to the Toarcian stage of the Early Jurassic. In Britain it is subdivided regionally, with formations such as the Blue Lias in southern England and, in Yorkshire's Cleveland Basin, the Cleveland Ironstone and Whitby Mudstone, along with limited outcrops in Scotland.
