The Kuril Islands are a volcanic archipelago of 56 islands stretching about 1,300 kilometers through the western Pacific from Hokkaido in Japan to the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The chain separates the Sea of Okhotsk from the open Pacific Ocean and is administered as part of the Sakhalin Oblast of Russia, though Japan disputes Russian ownership of the four southernmost islands.
