A kolk lake is a plucked bedrock pit or rock cut basin formed by a kolk, an underwater vortex that scours a streambed where fast moving water rushes past an obstacle. The high velocity gradient in a kolk produces a tight, high shear rotating column of water, similar to a tornado, powerful enough to pluck multi ton blocks of rock and carry them in suspension for kilometers. The pits left behind by this scouring become the basins of kolk lakes.
