Khumbu Glacier

The Khumbu Glacier is a valley glacier in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, lying between Mount Everest and the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. Spanning from about 7,600 meters at its source to about 4,900 meters at its terminus, it is described as the highest glacier in the world and is also the largest glacier in Nepal. Its upper reach passes through the Western Cwm near the base of Everest, and its lower western end forms the Khumbu Icefall, the first major obstacle, and among the most dangerous sections, on the standard South Col route to the summit of Everest. The glacier is followed closely by trekkers on the approach to Everest Base Camp.
