Khan Tengri stands at the China-Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan tripoint east of Lake Issyk-Kul, in the Tian Shan range of Central Asia. Its rocky summit reaches about 6,995 meters, while its permanent glacial icecap extends the peak's effective height to about 7,010 meters, a distinction that lets mountaineers count it among the 7,000-meter peaks eligible for the Soviet-era Snow Leopard mountaineering award. It is a non-volcanic peak raised by the same tectonic processes uplifting the wider Tian Shan system, its sharp marble-and-granite pyramid famous for catching alpenglow in a striking reddish color at sunset.
