Kanlaon Volcano

Kanlaon Volcano straddles the boundary between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental provinces on Negros Island in the Philippines, reaching an elevation of about 2,465 meters, the highest point on Negros and in the wider Visayas region. It is an andesitic stratovolcano and the most active volcano in the Visayas, having erupted more than forty times since 1819, its activity typically consisting of ash emissions and phreatomagmatic explosions rather than large lava flows. Recent unrest has included an explosive eruption on June 3, 2024 that produced a five-kilometer ash plume, a stronger eruption that December prompting the evacuation of roughly 87,000 people, and further ashfall reaching as far as Cebu in 2026, with a permanent danger zone maintained around its crater.
