A kame delta is a glacial landform built where a stream of meltwater flowing through or around a glacier empties into standing water and deposits sediment. As the meltwater stream enters a proglacial lake at the edge of the ice, it lays down layers of silt, sand and gravel that are relatively well sorted by the flowing water, though sharp changes in grain size can mark sudden shifts in the stream velocity. Sediment continues to build outward from the ice margin, producing an asymmetrical, flat topped, triangular deposit with a gentler slope facing the lake and a steeper slope that once rested against the glacier. Once the glacier retreats and any buried ice beneath the delta melts, the edges of the deposit can subside and slump, leaving visible fault lines along its flanks.
