The Kadisha Valley is a gorge carved by the Kadisha River in the North Governorate of Lebanon, its name meaning Holy in Aramaic. For centuries the valley has sheltered Christian monastic communities among its steep cliffs, which hold numerous caves once used as monastic cells and chapels. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 as the site of some of the earliest Christian monastic settlements in the world.
