The Kaapvaal Craton is a stable block of ancient continental crust covering about 1,200,000 square kilometers of southern Africa, connected northward to the Zimbabwe Craton by the Limpopo Belt. It assembled episodically between roughly 3.5 and 2.5 billion years ago through repeated magmatism and the amalgamation of separate crustal domains, producing a basement of granite-greenstone terrain interspersed with older tonalitic gneiss; Proterozoic mountain belts bound it to the south and west, and Jurassic igneous rock tied to the breakup of Gondwana appears along its eastern margin. Its Barberton greenstone belt exposes some of the oldest rock on Earth, more than 3.6 billion years old, preserving some of the earliest known traces of life alongside significant gold mineralization and unusual ultramafic lavas called komatiites; close similarities between the Kaapvaal and Australia's Pilbara Craton have led some geologists to propose the two were once joined in an ancient supercontinent called Vaalbara, though the idea remains debated. This entity documents the Kaapvaal Craton specifically as a geological formation.
