The Jura Mountains are a range of fold mountains running along the border between France and Switzerland, built mainly from limestone laid down as marine sediment and later folded, more gently than the nearby Alps, during the same broad Alpine mountain building episode. The range lent its name to the Jurassic geological period, named for the limestone strata first studied in these mountains in the early nineteenth century.
