An isthmus is a narrow strip of land that connects two larger landmasses across an expanse of water that would otherwise separate them. A tombolo is a particular kind of isthmus formed from a spit or bar, while a strait is considered the sea's counterpart to an isthmus, a narrow stretch of water connecting two larger bodies of water rather than two bodies of land.
