Islas Marías is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 100 kilometers off the coast of Nayarit, Mexico, made up of four principal islands and five smaller islands and offshore rocks. The archipelago covers roughly 245 square kilometers and had a population of 1,116 people as of 2005. From 1905 until its closure in 2019 the islands served as a Mexican federal penal colony, and in 2010 they were designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; the archipelago is now being developed as a tourism destination.
