The Iron Gates is a gorge on the Danube River forming part of the boundary between Serbia to the south and Romania to the north, where the river cuts through the mountains separating the southern Carpathians from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. In its broad sense the gorge extends about 134 kilometers and contains two hydroelectric dams, and its narrowest and most famous section, the Great Kazan, pinches the river to a width of just 150 meters.
