The Hunsruck Slate is a Lower Devonian slate formation in the Hunsruck region of western Germany, roughly four hundred million years old, notable for preserving marine animals, including soft tissue, through an unusual process of pyritization, in which the original organic material was replaced by pyrite, rendering the fossils visible on X-ray images. The formation has yielded trilobites, starfish and other invertebrates in a level of anatomical detail rarely available for fossils of this age.
