Huangshan is a mountain range in southern Anhui province in eastern China, its highest summit, Lotus Peak, reaching about 1,864 meters. The range formed roughly 100 million years ago in the Mesozoic era, when uplift raised the area after an ancient sea retreated, and its granite was later carved into peculiarly shaped peaks by glacial activity during the Quaternary period. The distinctive jagged granite pinnacles that resulted have inspired Chinese artists and poets for centuries.
