A horst, in physical geography and geology, is a raised block of crust bounded by normal faults, most often produced when extensional forces pull the crust apart. As the block itself stays lifted or holds still, the ground on either side of it, called a graben, sinks lower, so that horsts and grabens typically form together as alternating raised and lowered blocks along a rift.
