Hibok-Hibok rises on Camiguin Island in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, reaching an elevation of about 1,332 meters. It is a stratovolcano and lava dome complex built from repeated dome-forming eruptions, with six hot springs and three named craters on its flanks, and a smaller cone, Mount Vulcan, formed nearby during an 1871 eruption. Its most destructive episode began in 1948 with years of rumbling and dome growth, culminating in a catastrophic eruption on December 4, 1951 that sent pyroclastic flows and landslides across roughly nineteen square kilometers, killing more than 3,000 people and driving the island's population down from about 69,000 to roughly 34,000 through mass emigration.
