Hector Glacier lies in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, on the north slope of Mount Hector, extending northward for about 3 kilometers. In 1938 a large mass of the glacier broke off and covered the valley below in ice up to 60 meters thick, destroying everything in its path in what was only the second recorded glacier hazard in the Canadian Rockies. The glacier, the mountain and nearby Hector Lake are all named for James Hector, a prominent early naturalist of the region.
