The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major volcanic islands, along with several atolls and numerous smaller islets, in the North Pacific Ocean. The chain extends roughly 1,500 miles from the island of Hawaii in the south to the northernmost Kure Atoll. Formerly called the Sandwich Islands, the archipelago's present name derives from Hawaii, its largest island.
