The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes form the largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco and the second largest in California, an 18-mile stretch of coastline on the state's Central Coast extending from southern San Luis Obispo County into northern Santa Barbara County. The dune complex supports a unique ecosystem with many endangered and threatened plant and animal species, is recognized as a National Natural Landmark, and is owned and managed by a mix of federal, state and local agencies alongside private landholders, with parts of the dunes set aside for conservation and other parts used for recreation such as camping and off-highway vehicle use.
