A grotto is a small natural or artificial cave. A natural grotto is typically a modest coastal recess that can be partly or wholly submerged at high tide, unlike the larger, more extensive cave systems that form entirely underground. Since the Renaissance the word has also described artificial grotto-like recesses built as garden and landscape features, but the geological sense remains the small, often water-associated coastal or rock-face recess.
