Grinnell Glacier lies in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park, Montana, on the north flank of Mount Gould at an average altitude of about 7,000 feet. Named for conservationist George Bird Grinnell, it has retreated sharply since the mid-19th century, from about 710 acres in 1850, including the ice apron now separated as Salamander Glacier, to about 220 acres by 1993, and lost nearly 40 percent of its remaining area between 1966 and 2005.
